Brief Introduction to Heidi English School
Heidi English School was licensed by the Dandong Education Bureau in August 2002.It is a well-established private school (5 years), Australian and Chinese owned and run. The school is one of the famous biggest private English school in Dandong. The school is located in the heart of the city, but perhaps city is the wrong term. Downtown (or CBD) Dandong has a population of approx 800,000, and the county has just over 2.3 million people (just a mere dot on the map of China!). Having said that, you can walk across the city in about 35mins, and everywhere is just a Y5 taxi-ride away. In brief, Dandong is famous for being the largest border-city in China (bordering North Korea), it is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and is VERY clean by Chinese standards - blue skies on 5 out of 7 days on average!! It is a rapidly developing area, hence the push for excellent English speakers in this region. The city's streets are tree-lined, and the view across the wide YaLu River is of course to North Korea. If a local were to ask you ‘why did you come to Dandong to work’, they would then probably speculate that you came for the clean surroundings, the excellent food and the great weather. I would say yes on two counts but question their third speculation! Coming from Australia, Dandong is cold in winter. Ok, make that freezing! Wearing thermals becomes second nature as it is below zero for a good part of winter. Summer on the other hand is quite pleasant in my view, but is deemed quite hot by Canadians and Europeans as it gets up to the 30’s (C.) in the height of summer.
Life in Dandong aside from the school, can range from Chinese lessons (Mandarin), cooking lessons, or Kung Fu lessons depending on whatever it is you want to learn. The locals love sports, and of course the dreaded Karaoke. You can also take your pick from mountain climbing, temple discovering, calligraphy-ing, KFC'ing or bowling, to bike riding, people watching and internet ting. It’s up to you really, we have very very helpful staff on hand for little translation cards to help you get around or give you suggestions on where to head for your days off. Some teachers seem to stay for a year and manage on approx 30 Chinese words and then there are others who after returning home still regularly call the school to practice their Chinese with their old co-workers and to get the goss! We’re all different, and the choices are here.
